GRAVESANDE’S Ring
The physicist Willem Jacob 's Gravesande (Holland 1688-1742) used this apparatus to demonstrate the thermal dilation effect on solids, by heating a metal ball. Before heating, the ball passed through a metal ring, but after heating the ball, it had expanded and could no longer pass through the ring.
